LLH = The Norwegian LGBT Organisation

LLH aims to work for the equality of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people and their liberation from all forms of discrimination. The organization had its early beginnings in 1949, when the Danish Forbundet af 1948 accepted two representatives in Norway. The Norwegian Forbundet av 1948 was formalized as a separate organization in 1952, but the organization worked in secrecy out of concern for criminal prosecution and discrimination.

LLH was formed in 1992 as a result of a merger between 'Forbundet av 1948' and 'Fellesrådet for homofile organisasjoner i Norge'. A lot of battles have been won since then, and most of the world knows that Norway in 1992 was one of the first countries in the world to legalise registered partnerships between two people of the same sex. Norway has, along with Denmark, Sweden and Holland, had a reputation for being liberal, and in many ways the reputation is based on facts. However, the law it self doesn't guarantee tolerance and acceptance in general. Hate crimes are quite rare and cases of work-related discrimination as well, but prejudice still exists and the media still portrays homosexuals in the usual stereotypical ways. The fact that Norway has a number of openly gay politicians, authors, actors, musicians, athletes and journalists has eliminated some prejudice, but a lot of homosexuals are still afraid to be openly gay. Therefore, LLH has still got a very active part to play concerning counselling and giving advice, be it during the process of coming out or legal issues. In addition, LLH has several groups engaged in social activities in interest for various ages.

For many years a group consisting of both gays and lesbians has been visiting schools sharing "coming out stories" and debating legal and other issues concerning homosexuality. The debates show with clarity that young people still need to be educated about gay issues, hopefully allowing the next generation to become more enlightened and non-prejudiced. Bearing in mind that the swearword most commonly used among children and young people is the Norwegian word equivalent of the word "faggot", LLH still has an important role to play.
LLH focus public and government attention on cases of discrimination against LGB people by asserting political/diplomatic pressure, providing information and working with other organisations and national media.
LLH has about 2000 members.
